Nikah Khawan vs. Nikah Registrar
These two roles are often confused. The Nikah Khawan (Qazi) officiates the religious ceremony — the Ijab-o-Qabool and Khutba-e-Nikah. The Nikah Registrar is the official appointed by the Union Council who formally registers the Nikah Nama, giving it legal effect under the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance 1961. In many cases, one person performs both roles, but legally they are separate functions.
What the Nikah Registrar Verifies
- Both parties’ identity via CNIC/NICOP or passport
- Both parties are of legal marriage age (18+)
- Genuine, voluntary consent
- Two witnesses were present and are properly identified
- Arbitration Council permission, where the groom is contracting a second marriage
Registration Timeline
The Nikah Nama must normally be reported for registration within 15 days of the ceremony. Once registered, the NADRA Marriage Registration Certificate can be applied for — see our NADRA Marriage Certificate guide.
